Bandar Seri Begawan - Bernardo Orlando became the hero for the Philippines when his base hit helped Bathan Denmark to run home from the third base in the final innings and defeat Indonesia in a tightly fought final 3-2. The Philippine softball team captured the Brunei Amateur Softball and Baseball Associations Silver Jubilee tournament in conjunction with 10th Asean Men's softball championship. However it was Indonesia which took the lead in the third inning when Anhar Rachman and Otto Wahyu Minarto ran home following a long base drive by Davin Bratawijaya. In the following fourth inning, the Philippines rallied back with a home run by Mark Roe T Ramirez. Then Anthony Santo ran, home from third base, thanks to a low ball strike by Bernardo Orlando. Both teams were deadlocked and the pitchers were impressive on the mount, striking out their batter. But on the first of the seven innings, Bathan Denmark was able to get on first base and Bernardo Orlando hit a hard ball to the left of the field paving the way for Bathan to run home to take the lead. In the final inning, reliever pitcher Leo Barredo struck out all three Indonesian batters to cap off the win for the Philippines. The Philippines last won a major championship in 1995, coach Noel Bumagat said in an interview, "it was a tight final. We fought until the last inning and we never gave up. Third place went to Brunei's Team A. Brunei's coach, Louie De Guzman said "It's a historic achievement for Brunei to win a major tournament in an international arena." "Having trained for one-and-a- half months, I felt that Brunei softball players have improved greatly. However, there are still rooms for more growth." On the next tournament, he said "We will be preparing for the Asia Pacific tournament which falls in mid next year." Brunei Team A beat Malaysia 7-4, and then Singapore 5-4, for third place.
